SLED DOG RACING!!!

Yankee is co-sponsoring the race with Sandwich Sled Dog Race committee which is made up of Sandwich Sidehillers, a Ski Mobile Club long associated with the race, and a group of Sandwich merchants and residents.

In 2008 YSHC, after 3 consecutive years of no racing due to poor trail conditions, stopped operating the Sandwich 60 Sled Dog Race in 2008.

At that time YSHC attempted to arrange for other racing interests to work with YSHC in a co-operative venture to continue the race. Initially it was hoped that the Sidehillers, together with local interests, would step up and run the race. That effort failed.

Next New England Sled Dog Club stepped forward with an interest in offering racing from the Sandwich site over much of the original trails. It was planed to offer shorter sprint racing to start, with the thought of eventually having mid distance racing. NESDC determined the layout of the existing trails would not lend itself to sprint racing and withdrew.

In each instance, YSHC offered to co-sponsor the race with each group.

Subsequently, the Sidehillers and Sandwich Sidehillers and merchants put together a group to run the race. YSHC furnished the trophies and promotional support for the very successful 2009 race.

For 2010 YSHC also furnished trophies. Unfortunately that race was cancelled due to poor trail conditions. However, we will attempt to have the race in 2011!

The race is scheduled to run the same time as the Sandwich Notch 60 Sled Dog Race, the third Saturday in February. There is still a pasta supper sponsored by the Sandwich School for drivers meeting on Friday night before the race. The awards are no longer given at a Sunday morning breakfast, but later on Saturday after the race at the school.
